HOW WE WALK - BRUSSELS PRIDE 2025

16/05/2025
With How we walk, filmmaker Ítalo Tavares & BRONKS’ art mediator Pascal Buyse bring a visual manifesto for queer visibility ahead of Brussels pride 2025: UNITE, time to protect our rights, freedom, health, identity, diversity, communities, fight.

The video and photos will be on display in BRONKS' window on the Varkensmarkt from 16 May to 4 June.

In How we walk, Ítalo and Pascal turn their gaze to how queer individuals move through the city day in, day out. At the centre is a video in which people walk on a treadmill - from subdued to loose, from cautious to free. Their movements tell what words sometimes cannot: what it feels like to steer your body between safety and self-expression. A dangerous game that everyone within the LGBTQIA+ community, in Brussels or other cities, learns to play sooner or later. Every walk outside then starts from a hyper-conscious consideration: ‘What parts of myself can I show? How freely can I move around here? Do I choose my safety or my freedom?'  Every step is a choice. Every walk a statement.

At the same time, How we walk is also an ode to the city in which the work was created. Brussels is a breeding ground for queer creativity, supported by a strong but fragile underground network. Its communities are resilient, but dependent on limited resources. And even acquired (queer) rights seem self-evident, but remain vulnerable and under constant pressure - with trans people often the first target, but rarely the last. Every attack on them is a warning: no one is safe as long as some are excluded.

This is precisely why it is crucial that established institutions, such as BRONKS, support Brussels queer communities in all their individuality and independence. It is crucial to unite. And it is absolutely crucial to protect the rights, freedom, health, identity, diversity, communities and fight of the LGBTQIA+ community.

So How we walk begins as an examination of how we move individually, but culminates, especially during Brussels Pride, into one collective movement. It is an invitation to keep walking together. So, will you walk with us on 17 May in Brussels?

BIO'S
Italo Tavares (ItaloT) is a multidisciplinary visual artist exploring the intersection of performativity and visual culture. Existing between two geographically distant territories—Fortaleza, Brazil, and Brussels, Belgium—he inhabits both spaces mentally, merging influences that shape his artistic vision.
His work questions the tensions between modernity and cultural identity, blending Brazilian and European ambiances while addressing themes of belonging, migration, and displacement. With a background in Law, Political Science, and Applied Linguistics, Tavares infuses his practice with critical discourse, notably examining ethnic displacement and the complexities of multiculturalism.
Currently working in theater alongside his practice in photography, performance, and cinema, Tavares expands his exploration of storytelling and embodiment. Through his work, he seeks to spark a dialogue on the fluid nature of cultural hybridity and identity in contemporary society.

Pascal Buyse is an art mediator at BRONKS. Both within BRONKS and  his own art practice as a theatre maker, he works towards a more inclusive world. Among other things, he developed the Queer operation within BRONKS which provides space for the Brussels Ballroom Community.
