La montagne magique

A drama. A tragedy. A raging comedy!

This is the story of Raskolnikov, a young rebel crushed by misery. He fights against injustice, poverty, and the meagre prospects the world has in store for him. Having lost all sense of morality and in contempt of the law, he robs and kills an elderly loan shark. The world will be better off without her anyway, and the spoils can be redistributed …

His punishment is both relentless and self-inflicted. Tormented by the cruelty of his actions, he falters … Is he an unscrupulous know-it-all? A clumsy Robin Hood? A charming villain? Or simply a product of the world he lives in? Opinions in the courtroom differ.

This creation is a dissection of a crime, from the first fantasies to the eventual confession. Between action and reflection, humour and song, Les Karyatides’ puppets use an increasingly evocative rhythm and musical tone to deliver us to our own deliberation. A touching creation.
